* HOPE – AVHWA is a non-profit charity registered in Victoria, Australia. Founded by Venerable Thich Phuoc Tan (Quang Minh Buddhist Temple – Braybrook) and Reverend Father Joseph Bui Duc Tien, Parish Priest of Our Lady’s Church, Ringwood in early 2007. It has been created with two main aims: Medical & Social to offer free operations to those who are blind with cataracts in Vietnam; Dental services and to visit and sopport handicapped Orphans and Leprosy Camps.

In 2007, HOPE had its maiden Trip to two Provinces in Vietnam: Nam Dinh (North of Vietnam) and Lam Dong (South of Vietnam). 423 cataract operations were successfully performed; 96 dental services; 160 handicapped orphans received gifts and foods and two Leprosy Camps were visited Di Linh1 & Di Linh 2 (Lam Dong Province).

In 2008, HOPE had its second Trip to Thanh Hoa Province & Dien Bien City. 369 cataracts were performed successfully; 89 dental services and visits to a HIV Orphan Village and Leprosy Camp near the border of Vietnam and China.

In 2009, HOPE has its third Trip to visit two provinces in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam: Kien Giang and Bac Lieu. 357 cataract operations were successfully perform; 94 cases of dental services; 4 poor villages were visited and gifted with food and cash; 1 Buddhist orphan Villages was visited and gifted; 1 hospital (self-made) was visited and supported and 1 Handicapped Orphan Village was visited and gifted.

HOPE, also during the year of 2009, financially supported The Eye Hospital to perform 143 cases of cataracts for those who were so poor that they could not afford to pay for their operations.

In July 2010, HOPE works with The Eye Hospital and Asia Pacific Organization (Vietnam) to help 200 cataract cases in Binh Duong Province (New Economy Zones). The Project will be carried out on 7th, 8th and 9th of July.

During the year (2010) HOPE continues to support The Eye Hospital to help about 140 cataract cases (in similarity with what was done last year 2009)

The main Trip for 2010 will be on November (from 4th – 11th). Hope will visit two Provinces in the North: Vinh Phuc and Yen Bai aiming at 450 cataract operations. Dental services and visiting Orphan and Elderly Camps wil be done as the other previous years.(In partnership with The Eye Hospital; Asia Pacific & The Railway Department of Vietnam)

In total, for the year 2010 only, HOPE is aiming at 800 cataract cases. It means that 800 blinds will see again with the help of this non-profit Organization.

To carry out its task, HOPE works together with The Eye Hospital in Vietnam and Asia Pacific Organization based in Vietnam.

To cover its costs, HOPE has run many forms of Fundraising. HOPE also receives donations from many organizations and benefactors from around the world and mainly in Victoria, Australia.

All donations go directly to help those in need, as there are no overheads or administration costs.

HOPE has been a project of GDG (Global Development Fund) since 2008.
